Narrative

William Ralph married Addie Snell at age 24 in Broken Hill having left the family home at age 21 with the proverbial £1 in the pocket.
He had left school at age 9 and worked in Mr Tiddy’s Grocery Shop in Moonta to help the family income and at 21 took a coastal vessel to Adelaide then traveled to Broken Hill to work in the mines.
By the time he married some 3 years later he had purchased the Palace Hotel in Argent Street in 1993.
During the intervening years he also purchased the Commercial Hotel, which was held in the name of his wife, Adelaide.
He retained ownership of the hotels until 1908 when he moved to Adelaide and purchased the home at 20 Avenue Street, Millswood which was to remain the family home until after his daughter, Dorothy’s death in 1981.
He established a car sales business ‘ Orchard and Ralph’ in Flinders Street, Adelaide which only lasted in few years. He became an active share trader during that time and this then became a full time commitment right until the time of his death in 1959.
He was a major benefactor to his many brothers and sisters including purchasing hotels for Stephen (near Salisbury) and Sydney (Yorke Valley Hotel, Maitland).
